DIgSILENT Pacific delivers Moree solar-farm grid connection studies

The consortium consisting of FRV and Pacific Hydro's proposal is to design, develop, construct and operate a 150MW solar PV power plant in the NSW Tablelands. Based in Moree, the project is set to be one of the worlds largest solar PV generation facilities. The proposal is to develop this ground-breaking utility scale solar power plant using multi crystalline solar PV technology mounted on single-axis trackers to optimize performance. The installation will provide a demonstration of the viability of utility scale solar projects in Australia. The plant will operate for at least 25 years with construction scheduled to commence in 2012.

Moree Solar-farm artists impression DIgSILENT Pacific has worked in conjunction with the Moree solar-farm (MSF) consortium to investigate the technical compliance of the MSF with the National Electricity Rules (NER). The work is required to support a grid connection application and included the production of five technical reports:

- Lumped dynamic model - this involved the development of an 'equivalent' lumped model of the MSF for large scale grid studies

- Steady state analysis - this analysis involved investigating the steady state reactive power capability of MSF, and determining any grid impacts of the MSF on the connected transmission system

- Power quality - this study investigated the harmonic emissions from the MSF to determine compliance with the NER

- Dynamic stability - this study looked at the dynamic response of the MSF to credible transmission and distribution system faults to determine its fault ride through capability and compliance with the NER.

- Protection concept design - A review of the protection requirements of the MSF and compliance with the NER.

DIgSILENT has worked successfully with the MSF consortium to deliver these studies on budget and in a timely fashion and looks forward to continuing our relationship as the project progresses in the coming months.
