DIgSILENT Pacific was engaged by Transpower NZ Ltd, the national grid owner and operator in New Zealand, to understake a high level study investigating the impacts of increased wind generation in the New Zealand system.
A number of different scenarios for future wind generation in New Zealand were investigated with both South Island and North Island impacts considered. The emphasis of the project was on identifying the risk of low system frequency due to large amounts of wind generation tripping after a HV system fault. This was determined using short circuit analysis to determine the locations and faults that would cause widespread voltage depression and likely cause wind-farms without fault ride through capability to trip. The static fault analysis was then investigated in more detail using dynamic simulations of the power system for some of the more severe cases.
